Despite the peace deal struck between bandits and Zamfara State government, some bandits have reportedly unleashed several attacks killing yet to be ascertained number of people in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara state, the home town of the state governor, Hon. Bello Mohammed Matawalle.
This latest development came at a time the governor insisted that dialogue with the bandits remains the best way to tackle insecurity in the state.
Some credible sources told newsmen that more than 50 innocent citizens have lost their lives during the recent attacks at Maradun and lamented the failure of the state government to bring the incessant killings to an end despite what they regard as the unfulfilled assurances by Governor Matawalle that armed banditry in the state is coming to an end.
According to eyewitnesses who escaped to Gusau, the state capital, the attacks were very terrible and so frightening that they have to escape from the area to Gusau, the state capital.
One of the people who granted interview to Desert Herald, Mohammed Maradun said, he could not mention how many villages were attacked by the bandits and how many people were killed, saying that he knew that over 50 people have been killed before he left the area.
“We were terrified when we saw the gravity of terror unleashment which forced me and my family to run to Gusau for the safety of our lives” he lamented.
According to him, nobody can exactly say what was happening in the area as many people were running away from the area for the safety of their lives.
He maintained that the state government has been boasting that armed banditry is all over in Zamfara state which he said that the recent happenings have proved otherwise.
Another woman who gave her name as Aisha said that she ran to her family house in Gengeri Mai Gemu, in Gusau with her children as the situation was very terrible.
She explained that killings are still serious in Zamfara state irrespective of what the state government is claiming, pointing out that through out the armed bandits operations, there was no single security operative to salvage the situation.
“I don’t know why some people are still saying that the security operatives are working when bandits are still killing hundreds of innocent people in Zamfara state”
“It looks as if the state and federal governments are sleeping over the issue of security. If they allow the bandits to kill all of us in the state who will vote for them”
When contacted, a public commentator, Alhaji Ahmed Bakare blamed the ugly development on politicians, saying that politics and making millions in the name of security have become a very big and lucrative venture in Nigeria.
He said that politicians are the ones sponsoring all these dastard acts for their self aggrandizement, pointing out that no single individual is above the government unless the government does not want to act perfectly.
“We are now in a society where money is the alpha and omega. No matter how one gets his money, nobody cares since he is affluence and very rich”
” The society needs spiritual cleansing otherwise every body in Nigeria will be in trouble because banditry and kidnappings have become the easiest way to become rich.
Bakare noted that both the religious and traditional leaders are not doing their jobs, saying that moral teachings would have ended all these dastard acts in the society.
But all efforts by our correspondent to contact the state police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Mohammed Shehu proved abortive as his number was not going at the time of compiling this report.
Our reporter can still say that the state government has not made any public statement regarding the killings of innocent citizens here and there in the state.
